Customer Service/ Sales Marketing Training. For Job Seekers Looking To Stand Out

By Tabitha Makumi,

In a country where one diploma/degree holder is almost similar to the next one, you will often hear job seekers wonder. “What can I do to stand out from the rest of the crowd?” And indeed what can you possibly do when you have hundreds of job seekers competing for a single vacant position as you?

“Employers are nowadays going beyond the academic qualifications to hire that candidate who has something that makes him/her stand out from the rest of the applicants,” admits Gloria Michelle Otieno, Recruitment Director with Recours Four Kenya Consultants Ltd.

It’s for this particular reason that Ms Otieno feels that a Customer Service/ Sales Marketing Training which is slotted to happen on the 7th of June 2014 at 680 Hotel is a must attend event for any job seeker who is willing to give him/herself an edge in the Kenyan job market.

“True, most job seekers have the necessary papers to land any job but do they have the necessary skills to perform when they are eventually hired?” she poses adding that “Often you will hear employers complain of how someone who looked “good on paper” ends up being a disappointment when it comes to getting the job done for the sole reason that they can’t perform effectively.”

Why the training in customer service/sales marketing and not any other profession? I probe when I meet her at their offices in Kipro Centre, Westlands. “There’s a bigger market out there and we feel we will reach a much bigger network since every company has a sales department with employees who are looking to better their skills and with employers hoping their employees can learn how to close deals,” she adds that at the end of the training each attendee gets immense knowledge and a certificate as proof of attendance.

“With such a certificate, especially when you are fresh in the job market it will open doors for you since it shows employers that you have gone that extra mile to educate yourself even though you have no job experience but at least you have the practical training.”

And they do not just hire every Tom, Dick and Harry to train the attendees. “We look for experts in a particular field, people who are certified and have done such trainings before,” she says adding that at this particular event Airtel’s Program Delivery Manager Dr. William Swanpoel who is a Certified Trainer and Mr. Charles Mwakio, a Corporate Emcee and Certified Educator will be taking the audience through the loops of Customer Service & Sales Marketing.

“We also get a chance to invite guest speakers who speak on various issues. In a recent training event on effective communication we had invited Stella Mwangi also famously known as STL who educated our audience on Talent Management and on Saturday we will have singer Victoria Kimani speak about personal branding which is a major thing to educate yourself on whether you are employed or job searching.”

And what else will you get to be trained on? Among the topics to be covered are how to position new products and services in the Kenyan market, you will taught how to identify sales leads like a pro and easily close deals, also, you will learn of effectively ways of marketing a product or service, among other areas of interest.

So what’s the catch? You may ask. What stands between you and a chance to better yourself in the ever competitive Kenyan job market is Kshs1500. “It might feel like a bit of a stretch for a person who is unemployed but for such events with different companies they ask for say Kshs35,000 for the same training.” She says adding that with their cost they are hoping they won’t alienate job seekers.

“True, we could charge, Sh200 and take you to some dingy place but the experience won’t be the same. The environment matters a great deal and we feel that kind of environment (680 Hotel) will be the right kick for motivation,” she explains.

“It’s definitely a chance which will make you a better employee and a competitive job seeker as you will get the chance to train with the best in the industry,” enthuses Ms Otieno.
