Top 7 Successful Graduates From The University Of Nairobi…Do You Agree?

1. The Late Professor Wangari Maathai
We all remember her for being an environmental and political activist. In the 1970s, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement and in 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace”.

She was educated in the United States at Mount St. Scholastica (Benedictine College) and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

In January 1966, Maathai received her M.Sc in biological sciences, and was appointed to a position as research assistant to a professor of zoology at University of Nairobi.

2. David Mathenge
He is better known for his stage name “Nameless”

He was educated at Strathmore School where he later joined the University of Nairobi and graduated as an architect.

3. Titus Naikuni
He is the man behind the success of the Kenya Airways Group. He holds a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi.

He is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School’s Management Development Programme (PMD71) and was awarded a Doctor of Science Engineering by the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, an honorary award in recognition of his contribution to development.

4. Willy Munyoki Mutunga
The Chief Justice of Kenya and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya attended Ithookwe Primary School before proceeding to Kitui School for his Kenya Certificate of Education exams. He was the first student to score six points in the exams (an “A” in all subjects), earning him a place at the Strathmore College for his “A” levels.

Mr. Mutunga received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi in the 1970s and a Master of Laws from the University of Dar es Salaam. Mutunga joined the law faculty at the University of Nairobi as a lecturer, becoming the first indigenous Kenyan to teach constitutional law at the university level.

5. William Samoei arap Ruto
He is Kenya’s Deputy President. He attended Kerotet Primary School then joined Wareng Secondary School before proceeding to Kapsabet Boys, Nandi for his Advanced Levels.

He graduated in 1990 with a BSc (Botany and Zoology) from the University of Nairobi. He was also a member of Christian Union where he served as Chairman. He was ranked the best student in his class. He later enrolled for MSc in Environmental Science, graduating in 2011. He is currently pursuing a PhD from the same University.

6. Joshua Oigara
Joshua Oigara is KCB’s CEO. He studied at the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Commerce (accounting option) degree. He even became an official of the Finance Students Association and also played a role in AIESEC (International Economic and Commercial Sciences Students Association).

7. James Mwangi
Mr. Mwangi has seen Equity bank soar to greater heights as its CEO. After attending Kagema High School to read his A levels in economics, literature and geography, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Nairobi, passed a Certified Public Accountancy course.
