CV Writing Tips: How Often Should You Update Your CV?

By Elizabeth Benu,

A CV is the greatest marketing tool when it comes to wooing an employer.

Njeri Wagura sends an email asking how often she should one update her CV considering she is currently employed.

“I have been working as a Receptionist for two years. I used to update my CV each time I applied for a job. I am concerned about my CV because ever since landing this job I have never looked at it. Is there a stipulated maximum or minimum time for when one should update it? Besides, what is the need of updating when I already have a job?” she writes in an email.

Melody Mwendwa, a Client Service Personnel with a specialty in CV writing at Corporate Staffing Services, offers advice regarding the same.

“Having a stable job may give the impression that there is no need to revise your CV. However there is a dire need to keep refreshing it,” she confirms.

How would it benefit a job seeker to update his/her CV? I ask
“It reflects on your personality meaning that you follow through well in terms of the significant contributions to the company as well as changes in your job,” she says.

“Secondly, constantly updating your CV will help you get back on your feet once you lose a job. Imagine a situation where you are stressed after losing a job, would you make a perfect CV? No, “she adds.

Ms. Mwendwa gives a third benefit as, “It maximizes your potential as a candidate. Updating often ensures that you do not omit any achievements made. It keeps you ahead of other candidates in the sense that your achievements are clearly spelt out.”

How often should job seekers or those currently employed update their CV?

She shares:
The soon-to-be graduates with only an industrial attachment can do it once in 6 months since their experience takes a while to change. In the mean while they can sign up for volunteer opportunities and make it a worthwhile update.

The unemployed or those who have lost a job should keep their CV’s well updated since you never know when an opportunity will come up.

They should also understand their industry well and keep up with its trends.

The employed on the other hand should update it every 3-6 months. This is on the basis of continuous key achievements in your job that have had a significant impact.

If you are still lost on how to keep it up to date Ms. Mwendwa gives the following tips:

“Understand the new skills in your job market such as any new software and acquire them. This enhances your marketability since you are at the forefront of changing technology,” she says.

She also adds consulting with a professional CV writer and networking with you referees to the list.

“Getting in touch with your referees gives you the chance to know what they are up to and/ or if they have moved to another company or moved up levels. This is essential for your CV especially when job hunting,” she elaborates.

She concludes saying, “Capture any professional growth in your CV no matter how little it might be. Do not risk forgetting the finer details with time.”
