Is It True That All Accountants Are BORING?

It is mostly perceived by some as the boring career as people argue that accountants are always conservative.

People have often bashed accountants or people taking this career as miserable, and unattractive.

Do Kenyan accountants live a boring life or their profession is just one of the best?

“Accounting is pretty much like any other office profession. There is no job which is not boring as it depends with how comfortable you find it,” says Steven Otuka, a Senior Clerk at a government institution with an Accounting background.

“Coming from people who do not have a clue about accounting, they would definitely classify it as boring,” he opines.

Christine Mwende, a Communication Student at a Private University is still stuck to the opinion that “Accountants are an especially boring group of people”

“They are ever busy and have no sense of humor, just taking life seriously which is no fun.

I am very good in mathematics but I have never considered taking after I completed high school. I would not want to be in their position because they all seem like they are ever struggling with their work,” she says.

“Accounting is a good career choice with plenty of opportunity for personal development and financial reward,” says Michael Kimani, a Business man who runs a restaurant in the CBD.

“I am in the process of enrolling for accounting classes because of my business demands,” he reveals.

“Just look at how many directors of large corporations have an accountancy background and you will be surprised.

Also give me an example of any big CEO in the country that does not have an accounting background” he says.

Said Ibrahim, an Accountant at a Religious Organization based in Limuru is of the opinion that this is a very rewarding career.

“If you choose this occupation you can’t go into it expecting to be in the lime light. Yes we do agree that being an accountant is not the same as being famous like a news anchor or a politician but it is a rewarding job,” he opines.

“One must have realistic views of this occupation. It is one of those professions where you can never miss any job opportunity and the pay is usually good,” he argues.

“To be honest accountants are ever in demand,” he adds.

“I have never done the course yet but I can tell that Accounting can be really hard for people who hated mathematics in school,” says Faith Maseru, a Sales and Marketing Manager at a Leading Retail Supermarket in Kisumu.

“We have no right to judge it as a boring career based on how some professionals in the field act”

She advises that “Any profession including accounting as long as it is satisfying and seems to be making you grow career wise, go for it”

“I have met some accounting professionals and seen nothing boring in them other than being sharp and brilliant individuals,” she concludes.
