How I Got A Job At EABL, The Interview Process, Salary & Advice To Job Seekers

By Elizabeth Benu,
East Africa Breweries Limited is one of the most coveted employers in Kenya.

Career Point Kenya caught up with a current Technical Operator at the company and this is his experience so far:

How did you get the job at the company?
I placed my CV at a Recruitment agency and then went home thinking nothing will ever happen. Four months later I was called for an interview at the company.

What was the interview process like?
It was a tough one. I had to face a panel of three. Since I had no experience they asked me these questions: Tell us about yourself, what are your strengths and what do you think you are capable of if given this opportunity.

Were there any hard questions?
Yes. Two of them were about the job. I had no idea of what the job description wanted so I gave very vague answers. Luckily they picked me.

What does a Technical Operator do?
My main duty is to operate the packaging line efficiently while following site safety, quality and packaging procedures. I am also tasked with repairing and maintaining the line to achieve the required production outputs. I also ensure that the products are in specification by carrying out quality checks to meet the client’s and consumer requirements.

Having worked there for close to four years what kind of organisation is EABL?
It has good working conditions and the experience is exciting. It is an organisation that expects you to deliver and deliver well. The colleagues are also so supportive and concerned about you

How would you describe the working environment?
It is fast paced with very tight schedules. In a day you always have so much to do and deliver especially if you are in a senior position. For those in a junior position one has to prove to the management that you were a worthy candidate.

But all in all it’s an environment everyone can blend in.

With everybody loving to work here does it offer any training to its employees?
Yes it does. The company will offer training for personal growth such as how to manage your personal finances. When there are newly introduced processes or systems the company takes it upon themselves to train you.

Would you recommend someone to start a career here?
Sure! It is a company with so many openings. I f you are qualified you move up levels very fast. However, If you have less qualifications it is more likely that you will stagnate in one position.

What is the salary range for this position?
Currently my position earns Kshs.170,000 to Kshs. 180,000 a month

What are the most challenging parts of your job?
Having to work overtime to finish projects on tight deadlines.

At a fast paced environment, what makes you perform well?
It has always been my attitude. Instead of complaining of how short a deadline is I try to get things done and also ask colleagues for advice. No matter how bad things are I always find a way around it.

What don’t you like about EABL?
(Laughs) The meals. Sometimes you might be served the same meal over again.

What do you like most?
I love the fact that each day has its new challenges

Do you have any advice for the senior management?
I would advise them to be more realistic. Before setting any targets they should consult with the staff instead of putting pressure on us knowing we cannot accomplish as scheduled.

What advice would you give to job seekers interested in working here?
There is so much to do there. The energy you come with on your first day should be maintained throughout for you to grow.

They should also have self control. Alcohol is free for employees so let it not make you lose your focus. I have friends who have lost jobs due to over indulging.
