Sample Motivation Letter for Scholarships Application

By Mark Namaswa,
A letter of motivation (also called a ‘statement of purpose’ or ‘personal essay’) is your main avenue of convincing the institution or company you intend to obtain a scholarship support from that you are the right person they should consider.

The letter’s aim is to shed light on your background, and goals to persuade the selection team to pick you. Since they already have outlined what they want in the ideal candidate, outline your qualifications, abilities/talents, skills and experience that makes you the best candidate.

Also note some organizations are particular on font size, spacing and length of the letter. The trick is to counter-check instructions and revise the letter severally.

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: MOTIVATION STATEMENT FOR THE MA IN COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP
I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mass Communication in March 2013 from the University of Nairobi. My undergraduate degree focuses on Print and New Media. Through my studies I became fascinated with issues around new and emerging media and how information and communication impacts on human development.

I find information and communication especially relating to urban metropolitan areas interesting to study because different cultures combine to appreciate technology and shared information. This also makes me very interested in studying the discipline to the next level beyond the first degree. My undergraduate project was based on research I conducted on the reaction to new political, economical and social circumstances based on increased exposure to information.

The focus of the project was creation of a new type of collective residence in an urban area that would be able to accommodate the changed life style practices of the urban dweller. In addition, I have successfully participated in domestic and international open competitions that are dealing with the subject of communication and information on different levels. I have learned a passion for research and am especially interested in further developing my

The Master of Arts program in which I am interested to apply, I understand, has been offering a two-year postgraduate and I believe its international and interdisciplinary outlook will make me a more skilled and marketable professional. I am very excited at the prospects of pursuing my Master’s Degree thanks to the assistance of your esteemed foundation. I believe this approach will enable me to acquire knowledge and skills that will help me meet new professional challenges.

I have made the necessary contacts with my former Dean of Faculty, School of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Nairobi just in case you need a contact person to verify I am eligible to apply for the academic year 2014/2015.

With a solid foundation in academic theory and intensive research gained through the undergraduate program and fieldwork at Kenya News Agency, I am confident that I will have the skills, knowledge and contacts that will enable me, as architect and urban planner, to deal with the complex issues of the urban condition in my country.

Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response.

Your’s Sincerely
