5 Common Interview Questions in Kenya

1. Can you tell me about yourself?

So many people fail to prepare for this question as they feel its way too simple and when they fail to prepare for it they get nervous which obviously leads to failing the interview.

When answering this question don’t give your complete personal or work history. Instead give a concise and compelling answer that highlights exactly why you are the right fit for the job, says Ms. Mwendwa

Talk about previous experience and mostly achievement that you have made in your previous jobs and let that be what you are known for.

2. How did you hear about the position?

You may wonder why an interviewer would want to find out how you found out about a job. Also, you cannot give a one off answer like I saw the job advertised online, you need to engage the employer.

Well, it’s not more of how but what impressed you when you saw the position. To answer this you can quickly mention that you found the job advertised on an online job site, but it’s the roles or the company that advertised the position that interested you most.

Make sure that what caught your eye is something interesting and related to the position.

3. Common interview questions in Kenya-What do you know about the company?

The first thing you do when you are invited for an interview is to research on the company you will be interviewing with.

Researching on a company is not cramming the company’s motto and mission” Quips Ms Mwendwa

She say that you need to find out what services the company offers and go a step further and find out who their competitors are, this way you will be better equipped to answer the question.

When answering this question, you can also mention something that the company is best known for, if the company has also been in the news for something positive you can add that.

4. Why do you want this job?

The worst answer you can give is saying because you are jobless or because you are bored in your current position.

To answer this question, just remember employers are looking for somebody who is passionate about the job. So first take note of some of the responsibilities that make the role a great fit for you. If for example you are interviewing for a Client service position you could say.

I love client service because of the human interaction and the great feeling I get when a customer is satisfied.

5. Why should we hire you?

I must admit I have received more than ten requests this week from candidates who want to find out how to tackle this in an interview.

Among all other common interview questions in Kenya this is the one question that gives you the best chance to sell yourself to the employer in the best way possible.

To answer this question come up with an answer that portrays your capability in handling the position and that at the same time you can deliver. Also talk about how your previous experience relates to the job, don’t forget to highlight the skills and the achievements you have made in your previous positions.

Simply put, impress your potential employer.

The trick to answering the most common interview questions in Kenya is preparation and having unique answers. Work smart on differentiating yourself from other job seekers every step of the way during the interview.
