5 Ways To Make The Most Out Of That Internship

Recently I wrote an article on why you should accept internships, whether paid or unpaid. Today I will tell you how you should make the most of the internships you get.

This will help ensure you better your chances of getting a job afterward and will also help you grow your career.

Here is a list of ways you can make the most out of that internship.

1. Test yourself

This is the best time to figure out what you want to do in your career. Internships also offer opportunities for you to learn new skills.

It is, therefore, important that while you are on internship, you put all the skills you learn to the test. Do not be afraid to try and come up with suggestions and solutions.

By doing this you will enable yourself to learn new skills that you can put on your CV to stand out from the other candidates.

2. Consult your supervisors regularly

Your internship is an opportunity for you to grow and better your work. This can only be done by regularly seeking advice and feedback from those with more experience than you.

Do not be afraid to talk to your supervisor regularly about your performance. Always ask how you are doing and what you can improve on.

Not only will this show you areas you need to work on, but it will also show your superiors that you are willing to work on your weaknesses and truly want to progress in your career.

In turn, this might lead to you getting a job offer at the end of the internship.

3. Go the extra mile

As an intern, the most dangerous thing you can do is just do the work that is expected of you and nothing more.

Take Centum CEO James Mworia for example, as an intern he went the extra mile and that was how his career at Centum began.

You should ensure that you show that you are interested in the projects being worked on. Take initiative and take up roles that you can execute well. Do not be afraid to table new ideas that you think will benefit the organisation.

This will increase your chances of getting a job in the organisation. It will also ensure that you gain all round experience that will come in handy when looking for a job.

4. Network, network, network

You have the opportunity of working with industry players in your field of work. Please do not waste it. Remember, a majority of jobs are gotten through the networks you have.

Everyone you meet while on internship who is in your line of work is a potential network. This is your chance to get noticed by people who can eventually give you a job.

The professionals you meet will also make for very good references you can put in your CV.

5. Leave a lasting impression

This is something you should always strive to do as an intern. Remember, you will not be an intern forever and as such there will come a time when you have to leave the organisation.

The important part is ensuring that you leave a positive impression with your co-workers and boss. This can be done by having good work ethic, being pleasant and showing that you are dependable.

Leaving a good impression will ensure that when a job vacancy comes up you are the first person they think of.

You should always keep in touch with your co-workers and manager after your internship. This will ensure that they do not forget about you when an opportunity comes up.

Internships may seem like a waste of time but I assure you they are not. They act as a way of helping you learn new skills and make important networks that will help you in your job search.
