Email Mistakes That Are Denying You An Interview

1. Using the same generic email for every job

It’s tempting to use the same template to apply for all jobs. However, this shows laziness and lack of effort on your side.

What that screams to a hiring manager is that ‘I never did my homework but you should still consider me.’If you do not put any effort in reaching out to your potential employer, they will put even less effort in considering you for the position.

2. Taking too long to respond

Let’s say you have sent your application and the hiring manager is considering you for the position. They send you an email confirming that they are interested in you. However, you take a week to respond.

According to Ms. Melody Mwenda an interview coach, nothing hurts your chances of getting an interview than taking too long to respond to an email.

If you apply for a job, always ensure that you check your email on a daily basis.

3. You use very poor grammar

If you are still constructing sentences that a class five teacher would circle in red; then you are not ready to apply for jobs.

Nobody wants to hire someone who cannot construct proper sentences. I know sometimes you may end up messing up because you are in a hurry to send in the jobs application but always go through the email before you send. You can even tell a friend to edit it for you.

4. You don’t do your homework

If you are serious about wanting to be considered for a job, then you need to go beyond just knowing the company’s name and address.

One of the things that will hurt your chances of getting an interview is misstating information about the company.

A hiring manager is likely to take you seriously if you know a lot about the company and it shows in your email.

5. You misspell the company’s name

“I cannot tell you how many times I have gone through job applications and most of the candidates had misspelled our company name,” laments Ms. Muthoni Ndegwa, a recruitment manager in Nairobi.

Think about it, if you cannot spend ten seconds on Google to check the spelling for the name of the company you are applying to, how am I supposed to take you seriously as a recruiter?

6. Using emojis

I know emojis are cute and everything but come on. You want to be taken seriously by the hiring manager and using emojis in the email is not going to cut it.

The hiring manager is not your friend and the relationship needs to remain as professional as possible.

When applying for jobs through email, it is possible to make some of the email mistakes listed above. You can avoid this by editing the email before you hit send as well as doing your own research about the company.
