Job Application Checklist: Where Are You Going Wrong?

You’ve done all in your power and your networks power to get a job. Despite all these efforts, you have not even secured an interview leave alone a job, leaving you woefully unemployed. Could there be some minor things that you are overlooking that have a major impact on your job search?

Here is a checklist to see where you are tripping and how to fix it.

How much effort do you put in filling out job applications? Do you fill out that online application just for the sake of it or do you fill it out as if your life depends on it? If your application is not of quality, your chances of hearing back from a potential employer decreases.

-How many job applications do you apply for in a day? If you are applying for way too many jobs, you are likely to suffer from burnouts which result to poor quality applications. Take time out to re-energize and reorganize your job application strategies.

-Do you have a search list? A search list is a list of organizations and/r industries that one wishes to work with. Having one will ensure that your job search is targeted and you don’t wander around so much.

-Is your CV and cover letter a cut one fit all or do you tailor them to each job that you apply? Generic applications could be the reason as to why you are not making headways with your job search. Customize your CV for each position that you apply for to capture the skills they are after.

-Are you maximizing your networks to learn about the unadvertised jobs in different organizations? Networks are a great resource and a great way to getting your foot in the door to potential employers.

-Do you proofread your applications before sending them? No? Okay, then stop wondering why your applications are hitting a brick. If your job applications have errors, they will hold against you and no one entertains sloppiness, and there goes your job.

-Do you do job follow up to ensure that your application was received or you just sit and wait as you bite your fingernails to be called for an interview? Well, you should follow-up on your applications typically after a week to know if it was received. After an interview, you can follow-up once a week to show interest, but don’t become a bother.

-What measures have you taken to making yourself more marketable other than your academic qualifications? Join professional associations in your field such as KUJ, ICPAK and/or IHRM. You must have seen how employers are keen on this associations.

-How professional is your CV? Is it one that you did after graduating and you have just been updating? Having your CV on point will ensure that you seal the deal, get the interview and get the job.
