“Why is this job market so messed up? You apply for so many jobs, get called in for interviews, yet for some reason, the recruiter never seems impressed. Why would somebody invite you for an interview just to mess with your head?” This was me about eight months ago.

Having completed university about a year ago I engulfed on the treacherous journey that is job searching. Just like every other job seeker out there, I was not having it easy.

Sad to say that my perceptions about the job market changed drastically. I could still recall, how when still in university, I used to think that I would finish and finally land a job one or two months later.

Well, months passed and before I knew I had been out for an entire year. Not that I was not applying for jobs. NO. I used to apply for jobs over and over again.

I was lucky because out of those jobs I never missed to be invited for at least one interview. However, despite what I used to think was an exceptional performance, these interviews never bore any fruit.

The story was always the same.

“We will give you a call once we reach a decision.”

Sometimes the things that let us down the most are the ones we never think about. Have you ever thought that your interview skills might be contributing to your current jobless situation? I didn’t and that cost me time and a lot of resources.

Here is a clean sheet on how you can pass your next job interview:

1. Prepare! Prepare and prepare some more

Don’t just walk into a job interview thinking that since you impressed them with your CV, the interview will be a walk over. There will always be someone else more qualified than you so don’t be so optimist.

Review your CV and go through the job description one more time since you will find that most of the questions you will be asked revolve around what is in the job description and there is nothing worse than not being able to answer questions regarding a job you so confidently applied for.

2. Get to know the organization

I cannot emphasize this enough. If you want to ace any job interview, get to know the people you are willing to work for.

It doesn’t matter whether you are interviewing for a volunteer or internship position, researching an organization is key if you are to succeed in the job interview.

3. Look your very best

Get to know the culture of the organization, scratch that, dress to impress. Remember that cliché saying of you only get one chance to make a lasting impression? Yeah, you really need that if you are to become the independent person you’ve always wanted to be.

Make yourself look as presentable as you can be but at the same time, be careful not to overdo this.
