Why You Should Stop Worrying About Your Future And Just Start Living

By Lilian Wamaitha
How many times have you lost sleep because apparently you don’t have a clue what you are doing with your life?
“Is this even the right job for me?” “Am I in the right relationship?” “I’m in my twenties and have never had a serious relationship”
We have all been there, some of us a few too many times worrying about a future that we have no control over.
The problem on dwelling in what may or may not happen is that it is a total waste of time and energy. While we all subconsciously know that, we still worry.
1. Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy
Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday? Looking back, was is it really worth it?
Like you, I used to worry a lot. Somehow I would deny the fact that I was worried but it was right there, written in white chalk for everyone to see.
You have friends who seem to have already figured out what they want to do with their lives and somehow you are feeling like you are letting yourself and everyone around you down. You have relatives who seem to be the pace setters of the family and you are always hearing about all they are accomplishing at family meetings. And what do you do?
You sit in corner and start worrying about the fact that you are not where you had dreamed of being ten years ago.
Worrying is only making you not enjoy today. When you think about it, nobody’s life is perfect and we are all fighting different battles. But somehow, amidst all that, you have managed to rise and that is why you are where you are today.
Like yesterday, tomorrow with come with its own set of problems and like today, you will find a way for getting past them.
Problems don’t go away, we only become stronger. And in the end, whether it will happen in two years or five, you will achieve that that you are working so hard towards.
2. Worry like a stalled bus, gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere
While worry may give you something to do at this moment, you most likely have other things that you could be doing. Like focusing on your to-do list or noticing all those opportunities around you.
Actually when you think about it, just because you are worrying doesn’t mean that all your problems go away. It never gets you to that place where everything works well and your future is taken care of. In fact in most instances, it only does the opposite.
And the moment you realize this, is the moment you start living.

3. Focus on what you can control
You do not have the power to predict how your future will look like. Even super heroes don’t do that. So why waste your time and energy obsessing over something you have no control over?
Stop worrying about ‘what might happen” and start focusing on what you can actually do today.
4. What you are doing is just missing out on life
I love giving people advice and if there is something that I’ve learnt throughout my life is that dwelling on the “what ifs” just works to ruin the right now.
Think about it; instead of visualizing everything that could go horribly wrong, why not live in the moment believing that whatever the worlds throws at you, you will just get past it with the grace and confidence you have always had all these years.
Life they say is too short, and you should not waste the valuable time you have on things that may or may not happen.
5. Actually, why not fight for what you want now?
Instead of worrying about your friends, relationships, career or family, why don’t you go out there and actually do something about it?
If you have reached a point where you hate you job, find a way to make it enjoyable or find another one.
Fight for what you want, for that job, that person you love, go hang out with people who are important to you, mend you broken relationship with your parents. Just use that time to improve on what you can now, rather than dwelling on a future that you can’t control.
Life is not about what the future looks like but it’s about the things that you are doing today. While worrying may make you feel like at least you care about your tomorrow, in real sense it’s only robbing you of the joys of today.
