5 Things You MUST Research on a Company Before The Job Interview

By Jane Okoth,

Normal procedure when preparing for an interview is researching about the company.

Knowing more about your potential employer will not only make it easier to ask and answer a few interview questions, but you will also find out if the company’s culture and policy fits your expectations.

It may turn out that you did a shallow research and end up clueless at the interview thereby ruining your chances of getting that dream job.

To avoid this, here are 5 things that you need to know about the company before setting foot in an interview.

1. The skills and experience the company values.

“First and foremost, you should know what the company is looking for in a qualified candidate,” says Heather R. Huhman a Career Expert at Glassdoor Blog.

Kate adds that you can also find out information on the employer’s career page to get an idea of the type of employees they desire.

“In addition, also reach out to current employees who work there and ask them about what their employer values most in the workplace,” she opines.

2. Key players of the organization.

Ms Huhman states that the key players within an organization are those employees who hold important positions in the company.

“These individuals can be managers, department directors, and especially the CEO of the company.

Find out about them by reading the employer’s “About” page and employee comments,” she suggests.

Kate Wilson of Quintessential Careers agrees that you need to who calls the shots at the company by knowing the name of the CEO and key top management of the company.

“If the company you are applying to is not large, know the name of the manager or top supervisor you will be answering to,” she says.

3. News And Recent Events About The Company

When you go into a job interview, Ms Huhman says that it’s always a good idea to be knowledgeable about the company’s latest news and updates.

“This can be found on the page of the company’s website which is dedicated to press releases and events,” she suggests.

Kate Wilson adds that is important to know what is being said about the company in the news and through social networks

She further opines that “if the company is on Facebook or Twitter, visit the company’s page and read up on what the company is saying to fans and followers.”

4. Company Mission Statement and Basic Facts.

“Go immediately to the “About Us” and “Mission Statement” portions of the site,” advises Kate Wilson.

She also adds that it is important to learn what the company does and familiarize with the products and services provided by that company.

“Important facts to note are the location of your company’s headquarters, if the company is international and how many people the company employs,” she adds.

In doing so Ms Wilson is certain that you may get a glimpse of how the company wants to represent itself to the public and what the company values.

She concludes by saying that” during the interview process, you can use this knowledge to explain how your values and objectives line up with the company’s.”
